Espresso, Charlie, and Gus Update

Charlie, "Sometimes you take a shot, and the angel comes out like an angel."
Gus, "Why, yes - sometimes I like to channel Samuel Bun Jackson."
Espresso
Espresso for the lizard brain

Hellos, Everybunny!

We're still decompressing and trying to wrap our heads around  Charlie's adventure from two weeks ago. Aside from that, everybun is doing well. That's about all the news we have.

My hoomin has a long weekend and managed to steal all our poops last evening, so he's on a hook for nothing! Of course, we'll make sure to make more, and before he knows he'll be stepping in it everywhere. But I think he likes it like that.

So it's going to be napping and arting weekend.

And Charlie? Something's different about her. We celebrate her like she's two weeks old. She has more energy, gallops faster, and doesn't run to the bin every five seconds. What a reminder we had to appreciate bun another's company.

 We'll keep you posted!

The Bunday Evening Thumps

Good evening, Everybun!

I have my girlfriend back! She's eating hay, and she's OK! I know - I said that yesterday, but the excitement is not wearing off.

This morning, we took down the recovery pen. Charlie didn't have to take any meds. It felt like a day off! She made quick work of inspecting her usual hoping grounds, and even dropped in to see the murderizer! She looked his place over for floozies and came right back.

Now we're just chilling and taking it easy, and nobunny has any "musts" or "have tos."

My hoomin set up a shallow profile bin for us so Charlie wouldn't have to work too hard to get into it. We'll keep this set for a few days to see how it works.

And not to jinx anything, but my hoomin might be able to do a bit of art today - for real this time

Goodnight and good luck!

Espresso, Charlie, and Gus Update

Charlie, "Morning rounds just suck!"
Gus, "And you are!?"
Charlie, "Could you kindly just please bugger off!?"
Vector, Charlie, and Gus
Vector, "If you as much as think about chinning me, I swear I'm gonna cut you!"
Charlie, "OK, that's enough of this nonsense!"

Hellos, Everybun!

She's eating hay - she's OK!

Charlie had a re-check on Thursday, and the V. E. T., Dr. Teed of Keystone Animal  Hospital in Bradenton, couldn't be hoppier with her progress. Everything is healing up as it should.

The re-check happened a day sooner than planned because my hoomin looked at Charlie's belleh Thursday morning and freaked out. What didn't look right to him was the innards adjusting to the new space. The doctor thoroughly felt around Charlie's gut, and all was well. The incision is healing properly, the membrane is OK too, and no - she does have a post-op hernia.

This morning, she got the last dose of the Enrofloxacin antibiotic, and we officially finished her meds. The enclosure will go down tomorrow morning, and Charlie will re-enter her "normal"  environment.
As you can see, we got to spend some time together. I'd visit her, tend to her head, eat her greens and pellets,  then try to rip up her pee pads and, of course, get kicked out after that. But, our visiting hours were plentiful, if irregular.

So,  what will happen next? The dinner salads are already different. Gone are the things with high calcium content, like our beloved dandelions. Sigh. We'll talk to the V. E. T. about including X-rays in wellness checks. Charlie probably carried that stone for a long time. She's been doing so well for so long that my hoomin never suspected something might have been seriously amiss.

We are just grateful to have all this extra time with her. Funny how somebun's near-death experience can hit you in the noggin so hard.

We'll keep you posted!

The Bunday Evening Thumps

Good evening, Everybun!

We've made it past the seventy-two-hour mark, somewhere around noon or one o'clock. In the morning we had a bunch of fresh poops, and Charlie was all tucks-out.

It's a  little tough for her to get any decent rest during the day no matter how quiet the hoomins try to be, so we're hoping for an early nigh-nigh for everybun.

My hoomin feels we're still far from being out of the  woods, and the best we can do is "work the problem." Charlie's been devouring greens all day, but she'll get another round of recovery food shortly, just to be on the safe side. We have not seen any fresh pellets from here in a while, and we're getting concerned. Then again, maybe she likes to make pellets at night when at least she can have some privacy.

This is Charlie's current medication schedule

Morning:

Enrofloxacin - (antibiotic) 1.6 m

Meloxicam - (pain and anti-inflammatory) 0.4 m

Metoclopramide - 0.7 ml

Evening:

Meloxicam - (pain and anti-inflammatory) 0.4 ml

Metoclopramide - 0.7 ml

We used what we had on hand for Charlie's X-Pen setup. The bottom layer is a 72 in x 72 in very soft, washable pee pad folded several times. Then a layer of Mr. Bun's cushy, fuzzy wool-like pads, made all the way in Manchester, UK - here's looking at you, Fleetie. Then, we top it with large, washable pee pads and a layer of disposable pads that can be easily changed.

We wanted to make it as cushy as possible for her.
My hoomin is kinda barely holding it together. Now, he only hallucinates during the day about getting some sleep.

At least we're in a better spot tonight than last week this time. Had we known back then ...
We'll keep you updated if anything new develops, but here's to the good old "no news is good news!"

Goodnight and good luck!

Espresso, Charlie, and Gus Update

Imaging from VEG shows two bladder stones and one in the uterer.

Hellos, Everybun!

We are close to the forty-eight-hour mark since the surgery. Charlie had a good night. She loves parsley, and her appetite is making a comeback! She still needs encouragement to eat, but she seems to be better by an order of magnitude than yesterday's.

She's making some pellets, peeing, and moving around. My hoomin is letting himself think now that she will recover, that this is not just a good fight for the principle of it.
Now, the last few days and even today feel like one nasty, long m*nd*y from hell, but at least we see glimpses of disapproval at the end of the tunnel.

I sayz to him, "Maybe try to catch up on sleep, take a nap between the medication times, and forget the rest." I don't think he could do anything else if he wanted to.

We'll do a better write-up on Charlie's setup, the meds she has to take, and maybe some lessons learned. That last one is going to be tough.

We'll keep you posted!

Charlie - Special Bulletin, Evening Edition

Good evening, Everybun!

Charlie is home and recovering. There were no complications during the surgery. She's a little bit grumpy and quiet, but who wouldn't be after this many m*nd*ys in such a short time.
We are getting good pee spots from her and even some poop! Now, who woulda thunk things like that can feel like pure gold.

We're grateful for every minute we get to have with her, and we're further along at a place that seemed almost out of reach last night.

Thank you for all your good vibes, well wishes, and prayers.
We'll keep you posted!

Goodnight and good luck!
- Gus

PS:  To keep things simple, I did not go with her to the doctor today, but it was the right decision. So, I can't give you a first account of the play-by-play at the surgery. But we'll piece it together as best we can and give you the rundown.

Charlie - Special Bulletin

Hellos, Everybun!

Charlie refused treats and salaaad m*nd*y night. We took her to VEG  (Veterinary Emergency Clinic) in Clearwater, and she stayed there all day. X-rays revealed a large bladder stone, kidney stones, and a stone in the uterer. She started receiving fluids and medications and started responding well to the treatment.

We took her to see Dr. Teed in Bradenton for a pre-op consult on Wednesday afternoon.

Any hope for recovery involves not just the bladder stone removal but one of her kidneys as well. And that's the complex and tricky part. The operation is set to take place around noon today.

As of this moment, Charlie continues to improve, and if we didn't know any better, we would call her back to her usual, loving self. The first thing she did this morning was try to finish Spresso's leftover greens. When she hopped over to his part of the DMZ, she immediately went to groom his head.

Maybe she only has a small, small chance to get through the surgery and recover, but it's a chance, nonetheless. Gus will go with her to keep her company and, if possible, stay with her for as long as possible.

We'll keep you posted,
- Charlie's hoomin.

The Bunday Evening Thumps

Good evening, Everybun!

It's been quiet in the burrow today. My hoomin's day got scrambled in the morning, so he just wasn't around to annoy us. And the next blob in the Atlantic is projected to make a hard turn to the north - I call it a good day!

Maybe I'll take it easy on my hoomins tonight and just let them be. Of course, it's still early enough for art to happen.

Goodnight, and good luck!

Espresso, Charlie, and Gus Update

Hellos, Everybun!

I have to say I'm disappointed in my hoomin. The way he let the storm scramble his noodle - he's just not cut out for a storm trooper.

In other news, we keep logging every time my murderizing friend sneezes. It happened a few times this week. So, we keep an eye and ear on it.

There's a new blob in the Atlantic heading our way. Of course, we're hoping it will be sheared off and turn north sooner rather than later. Then again, it will just try to drown somebunny else. It's as if we missed  that memo from Mama Nature, "Don't you make me drown you again -  this time, I mean it!"

All that will pass. I heard that today we art, which means extra cookies for yours truly—because that's how the cookie crumbles. OK, OK, I'll stop and see if I can get another chunk out of Spresso's hiney—he has been hanging out by the gate a lot lately.

We'll keep you posted!
