The Disapprovers - To Sample Or Not

Molly and Zeus continued to follow the "artery". Their "explore time" was coming to a close and Zeus was becoming hyper aware of the clock running out on them. He tried to raise anybunn on the radio, but all he got was a garbled noise. They were too far away and maybe too deep underground for their signal to reach the surface. Zeus stopped, pulled out his radio unit from his vest, changed the communication mode to Morse Code and tried to contact the surface again. He spoke normally, but the radio translated and sent out morse code dots and dashes, substituting words and phrases with abbreviations where it could. Still no luck.
"Molly, we've gone pretty far down, I don't think we'll get any signal until we work our way back to the surface." said Zeus, checking his gps receiver. They couldn't get any satellite signal either so they were looking at the best guesstimate of their position that the inertial navigation unit could produce. The track showed a gentle, descending spiral.
"Let's go back. We'll be better off sending the rover here." said Zeus, trying to squeak by Molly.
"Wait, Zeus." said Molly. She paused, stretched up as far as she could, stood on her hind paws and inspected the side of the "artery."
"I wish we knew if referring to this 'thing' as 'artery' is even remotely appropriate..." said Zeus, looking at Molly as she worked her whiskers and sniffed intently. Returning to a sitting posture, she pulled out a swiss army knife and tried to open one of its blades.
"What are you doing?" asked Zeus.
"I think it's a good time to try and take a sample of this thing."
"Oh, really?" asked Zeus as he watched Molly struggle with the blade. The spring was really tight and her paw kept slipping.
"We didn't discuss any sample taking, Molly!" said Zeus.
"Well, we'll have to take one, sooner or later..." muttered Molly as the blade flipped open.
Zeus watched in disbelief, stunned, as Molly ran her paw over the side of the artery, as if trying to find the right spot for the incision. She raised the blade...
Next thing she knew, Zeus jumped on her head like a facehugger and clung to it for dear life, trying to pull her eyelids shut. Molly started thrashing about and shaking her head trying to lose him. "Ghet offh meh! Ghet offh meh!" Molly tried to yell.
"Drop the knife, Molly! Just drop the knife!" said Zeus slowly and calmly, hoping she would drop it. Molly dropped it and used both paws to peel Zeus from her face. She got him by the vest and held him up by it in front of her, both breathing really hard. There was nothing he could do now. His eyes pleaded with her to let him down.
"Come on, Molly." said Zeus after a moment and she set him down gently.
"There's no sample taking on the schedule.", said Zeus, pausing before going on, "... and there won't be any unless we all agree on it. How do we know this thing isn't an internal organ?"
"What, is, the big, deal?! So we'll have a debate, we'll on and on about it and then we're gonna agree to carve it!" screeched Molly.
Zeus frowned and said "Do you know what's it like? Do you know what's it like to be carved and pricked, do you?!? Why don't we smear some lipstick on it to see what happens, eh? Please, just holster that thing, Mrs. Molly, will you?" said Zeus.
Silently, Molly picked it up and folded the blade.
"Come on Molly, we're gonna blow our 'slippage' time. If we decide to take a biopsy of this thing, we'll follow our protocol. I expect you to keep me in check as well." said Zeus, again, squeezing by Molly to get in front.
They moved along in silence, working their way uphill. the faint glow over their heads kept pace with them. Every so often they would try to establish contact with the surface, "Ground, this is Molly, do you read?"
For a good while they still couldn't get anything. Finally, when the radio signal improved, the gps signal got better as well. They realized that they could not tell where they were relative to where they were supposed to make the opening. They didn't mark the insides of the artery and now it all looked the same. They were mostly level, but that's all the difference they noticed. Zeus had to rely entirely on the gps. According to the tracker they were back in the same spot they set out from. They looked for the darkened indentation. Finally Molly said "Let's try here.." and she pressed her paws on the surface at about her chest level.
* * *
I was keeping a watch in the tunnel, hoping Zeus and Molly would show up any second now. I was about to put my paws on the 'thing' and try to make an opening. I was getting worried, they were almost past due.
Then the opening started to form and shortly after I was face to face with Zeus and Molly. I extended my paw to Zeus and pulled him up. He got out and sprinted out of the tunnel. I moved to the side and helped Molly out. She got out and quickly hopped away as fast she could. Neither of them said a word. Strange. Very strange.
I was yet to learn what their stony face were about.

Mr. Bun update

Chillaxing during after bum-baf snurgle ceremony. Wrapped in the Holly Knit of Auntie Jane!

Quiet week and my gut keeps getting better. Twice a day, I've been living it up with critical care treats made of raspberry, couple of very thin slices of naner and the Bene-Bac Powder. My pellets started to improve and yesterday I managed to stay the cleanest I've been  in a long time. This morning hoomin said my raisins were wonderful. Ba***rd took away most of my veggies.

He thinks I'll change my mind on hay. He even installed a hay-feeder module in my bundo. Made out of a large cardboard container after oats. Well, he said there will be pixes of it in the next installment of update. Because I just about completely bunstructed my current bundo and need a new one pretty soon.

And everybunny have a wonderful Merry and Hoppy Christams!

- Mr. Bun

The Disapprovers - 5 minutes

"Ready!" said Molly.
"Zeus, we'll start the clock on your mark, you'll have 5 minutes out, 5 back and 5 for 'spillage'" said Suzy.
"Wilco, 5 out, back and spillage." replied Zeus.
"Molly, back up a little, I'll get in there and we need to let it close. I need to see if this thing will open from the inside." said Zeus. Molly stepped back and Zeus got inside the "artery", very slowly and carefully. They were both clear of the "arterial wall" and in a moment the opening closed.
"Can anybunny hear me?" asked Zeus and they heard him on the radio, but Molly heard nothing coming through the wall.
"Loud and clear, only through the radio." said Molly.
"Right, I'll put my paws on it to see if it opens." said Zeus.
Molly stared at the spot where she hoped Zeus would make an opening and show his smiley little face. The moment seem to go on forever. Finally, a little opening begun to show and grew a little. There was Zeus, grinning!
Molly and Suzy
Molly got closer, put her paws on the edges of the opening and watched it dilate. She stuck her head in and looked around. Then she put one front paw in and let it rest on the bottom. Then the other paw and she was half way in. Zeus made some room for her and she got all in.
"Start the clock." announced Zeus as the opening closed. Molly's heart sped up, she started hyperventilating. She stopped for a moment, slightly shut her eyes and focused on her breathing, slowing it down. She felt the tension in her hind paws and relaxed them. She tried to note the pauses between her breaths. She felt the pressure around her eyes drop. Zeus looked at her and stopped.
Freddie
"That's much better, Molly." radioed Freddie, watching Molly's biometrics in adventure control room.
She opened her eyes, grinned at Zeus and gently hopped forward, "Let's go my friend, the clock is running."
Abby and Mr. Toes
As they walked, a faint bluish green glow from above followed them. Overhead, the artery was glowing a little bit. After a while, Zeus started looking up at that bioluminescence as if to make sure it was still there. He realized it gave the surrounding a little warmer and safer feeling. That realization settled on him slowly and he picked up his pace. Molly kept up with him.
Abby
They moved in the direction they saw the opossum move and Zeus kept looking around for the spot where they thought the little critter disappeared. There were no obvious signs of where he or she stood last. There was just one of those darker indentation in the surface of the "artery", at right about Molly's eye level.
"Zeus, this looks familiar, doesn't it?" said Molly staring at the indent.
"Yeah, there's one like that where we've made our little entryway. We also saw them on the video from the rover before we lost contact with it, remember?", said Zeus.
"Let's try it, shall we?" asked Molly getting ready to place her paws on the indent.
"Go for it." said Zeus and Molly sat up on her hind paws and placed her front ones on the indent.
We waited and watched the image from Zeus's and Molly's body cams. Since they have not moved very far, the video feed continued to be clear.
Mr. Toes
We saw Molly press her paws against the surface when the "artery" reacted and opened up. Very slowly, she got her face close to the opening and looked inside, her headlight created a ghostly atmosphere.
"Wow, that looks like what you're in right now." said Freddie.
"Stay out of it, please. When the round rover gets back, we can send it down there." said Suzy.
"Wilco! Let's move on." said Zeus.
They kept moving on and now the "artery" started to turn and slope down a little bit. As they walked, the video showed the slope getting a little steeper.
"How's your footing? Is it slippery there?" asked Freddie.
"It's very dry, I don't see or feel any moisture under my feet." said Zeus.
"Not slippery at all." said Molly.
The slope kept going down at a steady angle and they wanted to cover as much ground as they could, knowing they'll have to turn back very shortly. The artery continued with no end in sight.

I really should have demanded twice the nanners for this.

- Thank you Katherine!

PS: Fraggles is a 5 year old rex mix. Katherine says "As you can see she does not approve of photo shoots. The model in the lovely dress is Alanna Baroness a very successful fashion model. Mr. Bun update

Greetings Everybunny!

Hoomin took me to the vet yesterday for a re-check. So I peed on the vet's counter. Why not?

Word is I got overgrowth of "bad bacteria" in my gut. They checked my stool sample - I volunteered that on my own, right on the counter of course. So I got 5 days of Baytril  and pro-biotic powder to go with my critical care. I'm supposed to have that for 14 days.

My lungs sound good.

The subject of my cataracts came up. One eye is completely obscured. Doc said she would not put me through the surgery at this point. Especially since there's no guarantee I could see in that eye anyway. You want to talk about breaking my hoomin's heart. Not pretty.

That hair coming out on my back? Moisture, not being dry enough - after bum bafs. We'll make changes there.

But, we got props for keeping my undercarriage clean.

Last Saturday we did go outside and enjoyed some evening head rubs. Yes, I did try to bolt. I had to. Didn't get far though. His grubby paws were right on me.

We enjoyed a very nice evening indeed!

The Disapprovers - First Dive

Zeus turned to Molly and said, "Here, put your paws on it and try to steer it." Molly put her paws on the tablet and touched the control arrows and tried to steer the rover probe. The controls were very sensitive and at first the rover moved very erratically, trying to run up the side of the "loofah". "Slow down, Molly....", said Zeus, "... the smaller and gentler your corrections the smoother it will go."
"I'm trying, Zeus, I'm trying." whispered Molly, concentrating on the rover. Finally, she started getting the hang of it and the rover started rolling in the direction where we first noticed the opossum. As the rover rolled farther , it came into view of the disabled probe, still transmitting video. We watched the rover get smaller and smaller as it traveled deeper and deeper into the mystery, casting a pale light on the..., the thing we still didn't have proper name for.
Molly paused the rover from time to time, spinning it around and looking for clues as to where our little marsupial friend came from. There were no obvious indications of where somebunny could enter this "artery". The overhead glow we observed when the opossum walked toward us was gone. The surface of the "artery" guarded its secrets well. From time to time we saw a dark, pretty deep, round indentation in the wall, but that's about it. The "artery" curved and weaved on and on. What we didn't see was just as interesting. We saw no animal droppings. If one opossum run through it, acting like she or he owned the place, it would make sense that there would be more of them roaming about and doing their business right then and there. There was no dirt either. No leaves, no decomposed organic matter or anything. The place was pristine. I thought if the place is x many years old, I'd expect it to be clogged up with that x many years worth of dirt.
"What's going to happen when the rover loses contact with us?" asked Abby.
"It will continue to travel as long as it can until the batteries have just enough power to get it back to where it started from. Plus 10% reserve, I think." said Frankie, watching the incoming metrics on a screen in adventure control.
"Frankie, are you picking up any movement from the hoomins? It has to be getting light pretty soon. Can we risk staying here much longer?" asked Suzy. She and Mila continued to keep watch in the window and had to be bored out of their minds by now. "We're out of snacks and things to do here." added Mila.
Rover kept rolling and rolling and there seemed to be no end to the "artery". Finally, its signal started to get weaker and Zeus decide it was time to let the rover explore on auto-pilot. When signal deteriorated even more due to the distance between us and the rover, the rover stopped trying to send any video. It amplified its signal and attempted to send only its coordinates. Now we could only estimate where the rover was. If and when it turned to go back and got into range of a better reception, it would send us all the data it collected; pictures and all.
For now we had no idea how long we would have to wait for the rover to come back.
"How about we take a peek inside?" asked Molly.
"Do you want to crawl into it?" asked Suzy.
"Sure. It's safe enough I think." answered Molly and continued, "... while the rover keeps going one way, we can go the other. The "artery" is tall enough for me to move about in it. I could take a walk in there for 5 minutes one way and turn back."
A long silence followed.
"Does anybunny have any objections or ideas? ...anything?" asked Suzy.
"Zeus, can you get out of there on your own when you're done? Can you reach the top of the "artery" and climb out?" asked Molly.
"Nope, I can't reach the top standing there. I'm way too short for that, Molly would have to help me up or I'd have to have a rope or a ladder, or something to climb up." said Zeus.
"We can remove more dirt from the tunnel to lower the entry into the 'artery'." said Abby.
"Let's dig!" I said and instantly I felt my legs turn into noodles.
Then we heard Suzy, "Abby and Mr. Toes, will you please start digging; Zeus and Molly, can you get ready now?
"We're on it!" said Abby and she darted into the tunnel. I followed her. I felt like a part of me wanted to stay put and another part of me wanted to go for it in a hurry. The parts were fighting over my legs, trying to keep them still and moving at the same time. Somehow the part of me that wanted to get on with the adventure was winning.
To lower the entry point for Zeus took a lot of work and I was beginning to worry that we might run out of time. Abby dug hard and fast, I struggled to keep up with her. When we backed out of the tunnel we were exhausted.
Bruno was getting impatient too, licking his paws and nervously wiping his face. When I asked him, still panting, what's wrong, he couldn't tell me and only said "I don't know, man; I can't put my paw on it. Maybe I'm just over excited."
Molly and Zeus finished their equipment checks. Zeus made sure they were registering a good signal on the tracker.
"How are we looking, Frankie?" asked Zeus.
"Very clear, remember to place the repeater by the opening!" responded Frankie.
"Right!" said Zeus and started rummaging in his backpack for the repeater. It took him another while to turn it on and get it ready.
Finally they were good to go.
"5 minutes and you will turn back, if you're not back at the opening in 15 minutes we'll assume you're missing and will commence a 'search and rescue' operation." said Suzy, still perched in the window at the house.
"We'll be back on time!" said Molly and followed Zeus to the tunnel.
They put their paws on the "loofah" and in a moment it reacted, they had the opening.
Zeus stuck his head inside very slowly, looked around and asked, "Molly, are you ready?"
