Fish - Still Life, Ă‰douard Manet,1864

Good evening, Everybun!

We're enjoying having nothing to report today. Charlie's follow-up is on Tuesday, and until then, let's just forget about it.

My hoomin is trying to squeeze all he can from these tar pit-free days.

In the mornings, we would retreat to the bundo sitting atop another bundo. My hoomin would sit down next to us, open a book with his left paw, and put his right paw in our space - and start administering head rubs. Charlie stretched out, half asleep, and tolerated the affection for as long as she could. When she had enough, Charlie sat up, gently took the hoomin's paw in her teeth, and pushed it outside. "That's enough of that. You may buzz off now, hoomin!"

The paw would disappear and reappear a second later with treats.

This evening we'll work on the new painting for Bunfest. We took some reference photos yesterday, but we'll need to repeat the exercise.

And what to call this wonder? There's the "Charlie, Gus, and Mel I" idea, or maybe, "Olympia is now a Lionhead I." "I," because it will be painted more than once. We just know it.

During one of the History of Modern Art lectures, Professor Mel Leipzig covered a lot of Édouard Manet's paintings, starting with Olympia. The exposition covered the impact Olympia had on other artists' work and how Olympia kept reflecting in Manet's other pieces. When Mel got to this particular still life (Fish -Still Life, 1864), he said, "And now Olympia is a dead fish!"

We want to argue that Olympia is a Lionhead! Of course, you can listen to the lecture and decide for yourself.

And you're right - it's a nice problem to have.

Good night and good luck!
- Gus

Espresso, Charlie, and Gus Update

Charlie and Gus 26-02-14-gus-charlie-espresso-update-DSC_2025
Charlie and Gus 26-02-14-gus-charlie-espresso-update-DSC_2027

Hoppy Valentine's Day, Everybunny!

I think Charlie binkied this morning! Go figure.

The appointment on Tuesday went well - the daily sub-q fluids are reducing the calcification, and Charlie's kidney function is good. I had the scribe type "great," and then made him change it to "good," because I just don't know what the range is, what is "good," and what is "great."

The short of it is we survived another week-year. The appointment was one of those "doctor-tech" appointments, and I think I know why it rubs my hoomin the wrong way. It's not that Charlie needed a full-blown exam and workup. My hoomin did. There ought to be something just for hoomins hoomins. If Avian or Keystone clinics had coffee bars and were open 24/7, the sorry sod would never leave.

We are continuing the daily regimen of 50 ml sub-q fluids for another week. Aside from the "daily stabbing," Charlie is really doing well. We're learning how to keep staying in the moment, and with her, and next to her as much as we can.

Unfortunately, that means the stinker meat sack is trying to stay with me as well, and all I do is make shives from apple sticks.

We'll keep you posted!

The Saga of Marshall and Mandy

Penny turned twelve in May. She ate more slowly and napped more often, but her disapproving glare remained piercing. Penny loved to groom Marshall’s sexy ears, and the pair happily snuggled together.
In July, we noticed that Penny sounded congested. She had pneumonia, but she seemed well again after a few days on antibiotics. However, she had trouble chewing carrots and hay, so off to the vet we went again.

Penny had a couple of tooth spurs, so she had dental surgery a week later. The vet trimmed the spurs but noticed that Penny’s teeth were loose and that she had a cancerous growth in her mouth. We knew Penny’s days were numbered, but we hoped that she would feel better for a little while. Penny came home and had a joyful reunion with Marshall, but still had trouble eating.

Penny said it was time to hop over the Rainbow Bridge, and we all said goodbye to her on August 1.

Marshall missed Penny and wanted more attention from us, but didn’t lose his appetite. At the end of August, Marshall went speed dating at the Friends of Rabbits headquarters, where Penny had chosen him. Marshall behaved like a perfect gentleman, but didn’t find any compatible bunnies.

In September, we took a long car ride to the MD House Rabbit Society adoption event for more speed dating. Marshall met several eligible bachelorettes, seemed compatible with a young mini-rex named Miranda, so we adopted her and took her home.

Now the bonding process began, with both bunnies in separate x-pens in the sun room. Miranda Ballerina Thumper (aka Mandy) was happy in her new home and enthusiastically explored everywhere. Marshall said, “I like her, but I didn’t know we had to live together immediately!” Poor Marshall was very upset and tried to bite and scratch Mandy through the bars. The bunnies had separate times for free roaming and couldn’t be in the same room unless they were penned. It didn’t look like Marshall wanted to share the house with Mandy, and we felt discouraged.

Although the bunnies weren’t bonded, we intended to take a short vacation and have the pet sitter keep Marshall and Mandy in their separate pens. The bunnies did have a short date with no biting, but Marshall was still unhappy. As we got ready to leave in the morning, Marshall began having GI stasis. There were no regular vets available, so we spent several hours at the emergency vet clinic instead of on vacation. Marshall got fluids, drugs, and X-rays and was able to come home that night. He stayed in his room, away from Mandy. The stress of dating, redoing the living arrangements, and adjusting to a new bunny gave him digestive issues.

Marshall was back to normal after a couple of days, and dating resumed. Things suddenly seemed better, and they acted like they were flirting. Marshall groomed Mandy, but she wouldn’t reciprocate.

Finally, we put some sweet-tasting juice on Marshall’s head, and Mandy started licking him. That broke the ice, and they bonded completely. They both live in the bunny room together and have free roam of the house. It took about 3.5 weeks for them to bond.

Good evening, Everybun!

We had a great evening yesterday, and a bunderful morning today. Snack and head rubs until it was time to retire for the day-naps. We enjoy Charlie having a good appetite, being out and about with us, and just being Charlie.

My hoomin wants to keep it together, otherwise he would be of no use to Charlie, and lose his marbles at the same time. I mean, you can't be freaking out while giving Charlie sub-q fluids. You have to have your wits about you to tell if she's doing bunny things, or if something worrisome is developing. If the posts start to sound like gibberish, it's probably the kidney stone talking.

So we'll keep it simple tonight. Snacks, head rubs, loafing, a little bit of arting - Bun willing.

 Good night and good luck!

Charlie 26-02-07-gus-charlie-espresso-update-DSC_2030

Hellos, Everybunny!

"Don't give up just yet. Try to stay positive. We have questions that need answers. Once we have those answers, we can decide on next steps," wrote Dr. Zellner.

Last week had been a rough year. Charlie's appointment took place on Tuesday. Call it the "fog of miscommunication." We went to the V. E. T.  on M*nd*y, but for some reason, the visit was marked as a "tech-doctor" appointment. The best we could do was come back the next day. We scurried back home. Charlie sure did not appreciate it.

On Tuesday, my hoomin's worst fears were confirmed.

"Today we determined that Charlie is forming tones in her urinary bladder and her renal pelvis is becoming calcified."

The X-ray was not a glitch. Now, we are doing 50 ml of sub-q fluids daily. We have another appointment set for Tuesday. We will do a follow-up X-ray and blood work.

"If the kidney is shutting down, we need to discuss quality of life."

Charlie is a great trooper. We still enjoy snacks and head rubs. And have our art nights even when not much art is happening. If you didn't know about the calcification, you wouldn't know that something was off.

We'll keep you posted.

"Wyatt and Wynnona - Epsilon Lyrae"
"Wyatt and Wynnona - Epsilon Lyrae" - a big sigh of relief, it works as black and white.

Good evening, Everybun!

Let us welcome the New Year of February! The cold is here. The wind is here. But the only snowflakes you see are the Floridians, bundled up, wobbling about like some Micheline creatures, hissing, and whining, emitting a quiet, high-pitched buzz of lamentations, like some kind of frozen swamp mosquitoes.

Last night, my hoomin went for a walk in this, thumping bent on spotting a flurry, and got bupkis. Came back with a frozed off schnozzle, and spotted notin', zip, zilch!

We thawed him out and had ourselves a cookies-and-art extravaganza late into the night. He gave up, served us a plate of treats, and we took turns gobbling up whatever we liked. Charlie and I had a wonderful grooming jam session, and the silly biped just sat there spellbound, with his jaws on the floor. Creep!

And here's the rub: how do we concentrate on the best moments we have and keep them from falling into panic pits? How do we enjoy them, knowing - and not knowing - what lies ahead, when fear tries to steal it all, before M*nd*y ever gets here.

We're talking a very real M*nd*y. the one tomorrow, with a V.E.T. visit at half past two in the afternoon. ow. We're really asking.

When the sun goes down, we'll "go for two," with another plate of snacks, and more brush swinging.

Good luck and good night!

Bun morning, Everybunn!

There's talk of snow flurries in La Florida this weekend. You bet, we're trying to get our hopes up!

I'm doing well, and Charlie? That's the question. We just don't know for sure. Yesterday's follow-up with Dr. Teed at Keystone did not reveal anything new. Charlie was doing very well at that particular moment. Today, she's still mad at the hoomin and hides when she sees him. She gallops into hiding. The exam wasn't as upsetting as just the round trip to the clinic.

To be honest, the mood this morning feels grim. We're going through the motions. Dragging that one paw in front of the other. Waiting.

It feels like the stage of the journey you never had to enter. But here we are. Tonight, if all goes well, we'll have an art-and-cookies frenzy.

We wish it were just the gray skies and dropping temperature. We wish.

We'll keep you posted.

Bun evening, Everybun!

We don't really know where we are with Charlie other than the "here and now." If we didn't see that X-ray yesterday, we would think she's completely back to her usual self. That Saturday morning was just a momentary glitch.

Yesterday afternoon and evening, we had scenes of bunificent bundemonium while arting. She foraged in the oat hay, wanted all the cookies; got all the cookies. This morning was no different.
So where are we? In a bank of fog. Right in front is Charlie. Right now she seems fine, napping, noming, stretching, drinking, doing all the bunn stuff. A little further, there are mountains, trees, and ground. We're not sure where.

On Friday, we have a follow-up with Dr Teed at Keystone. Next M*nd*y we have an appointment t with Dr. Zellner.

One paw goes in front of the other. We fly the plane, we "chop wood and carry water." How do we pitch this thing for "best glide"? We fly the plane. We "chop wood and carry water."

We'll do what we can to stay in the moment. If we don't, we'll start looking forward to M*nd*y. Oh, yes, the outside world is not lost on us. We're mindful of what doesn't amount to a hill of beans in this world.

Good night and good luck!
- Gus

P. S.: While waiting for the doctor yesterday, my hoomin overheard comments about Charlie's portrait at the clinic. Oh, the "oohing" and the "aaaahing!"

"Oh, that's Charlie, and she's here today!"

We've been arting and taking pictures since yesterday, like our lives depend on it, like it matters.

Espresso, Charlie, and Gus Update

Bun afternoon, Everybunny!

We woke up this morning to Charlie refusing all treats and such. Off to the v.e.t. we went. We got lucky that Keystone had an opening this morning.

The good news is this is not a UTI, and there is very little sludge in the bladder. The not-so-good news is that there were traces of blood in the urine.

And the really troubling news is that the x-ray showed a sizable, "glitchy" looking white area dab smack in the middle of Charlie's last kidney.

The doc gave us stasis meds and metacam to keep her comfortable. Sigh. We'll do a recheck next Friday, and maybe Charlie will acquiesce to getting bloodwork done. She would have none of that today.

Good vibes can break up kidney stones and make them go through and out, right? Asking for a friend.

We'll keep you posted!
- Gus

P. S.: Of course, I went with her for company. You can see a bit of my hind side at the bottom of the pix ;-)

Gus, "That's enough cowbells!" "Wyatt and Wynonna - Epsilon Lyrae"

Bun evening, Everybun!

Knock on wood, it's another weekend with nothing to report. Another cold front rolled through, sounded like a tropical storm, and tore up everything it could.

We had an "extended range" Hoppy New Day rascality with snacks and head rubs. Since my hoomin didn't have to be anywhere or do anything, he really tried to pester the daylights out of us late into the morning. Then we all petered out.

I think the background for "Wyatt and Wynonna - Epsilon Lyrae" is done. "That's enough cowbells," I said.

Come evening time, we'll art some more. In the meantime, the lunk should sneak in another nap.

Good night and good luck!
